How to build good working relationships

I often hear from people that being in a friendly team and having good working relationships with their colleagues and their manager gives them a lot of energy. It may even surpass low motivation or missing excitement for their work.

I once heard a quote: "People don't leave bad jobs; they leave bad bosses."

That only underlines how important it is to be working with someone who inspires them and is on the same 'page' as them.

MY STORY

For most of my career, I worked in great teams, and I learned ways to create good working relationships - more on that below. But there was a time in my career that I struggled with some of my key stakeholders. I felt that I was very ineffective in my communication. Whatever I said, it did not land, and we would not move forward. It felt like we were from different planets, and I couldn't decode their 'language.'

During those months, I did not enjoy going to work; I kept thinking about them, about myself, what I could do differently. I just wanted to escape the whole situation. I did not have the tools or knowledge to solve it.

ENTER SOLUTION

I wish I had known then what I learned a few years later, when I came across Insights Discovery Model. The model explains a four-colour energies concept, where each colour represents specific behavioural traits and preferences in each of us.

We all have all four colour energies within us, it's just a mix of them that makes us the unique us. Once I got my own personalised Insights Discovery profile that is generated based on a list of questions I had to answer, I was blown away, about the accuracy of the description of my behaviour, strengths, and areas for improvements it had provided.

My profile came with an explanation of the model as such. Then I finally understood why I struggled with certain people in the past so much. I finally realized what I needed to do instead. I started applying it when interacting people around me, and I was amazed to see how well it works. EVERY SINGLE TIME.

conclusion

I loved the model so much that I became an Insights Discovery Practitioner to help others get their own profiles and learn how to apply it to their specific situations. And to learn how they can adapt their behaviour, using their colour-energy-mix to create working relationships that work.

If you are struggling with one or more working relationships and are even thinking of leaving the job you love, I know how you feel.
